The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) is the largest electrical union in the world. The IBEW represents workers’ rights in all areas of the electrical and telecommunications industries.
The National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) represents union electrical contractors who guarantee their installations, perform quality work on-time and on-budget, and who take a special interest in their employees.
The IBEW and NECA teamed up to sponsor the most rigorous and respected apprenticeship training programs. Established in 1941, the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for the Electrical Industry (NJATC) was created to develop uniform standards that are used nationwide to train thousands of qualified men and women for demanding and rewarding careers in the electrical and telecommunications industries. In 2014, the NJATC changed its name to become the Electrical Training Alliance.
The electrical industry is constantly changing and expanding at an ever-increasing rate. From its inception, the electrical industry has kept pace with new technologies and is now one of the largest industries in the United States. Due to the rapid expansion, our apprentices are given the best training, knowledge, and sufficient instruction in the theories of electrical science to guide them.
The Electrical Training Alliance of Asheville (Asheville Electrical JATC) has dedicated our time to develop an effective training program so the apprentice can, through a systematic program of schooling and on-the-job training, become a well-qualified electrical worker.

Charlotte Electrical JATC is a Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee (JATC) program based on the electrical training ALLIANCE / National Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee (NJATC) curriculum and consists of:
- 900 classroom hours over five years of study, training, and examinations; and
- 8,000 hours over four years of paid on-the-job training.
The Committee itself is made up of four representatives from Local Union 379 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and three representatives from the Atlantic Coast Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA).
All applicants who are selected into the apprenticeship program offered by the JATC are placed to work with signatory contractors of Local Union 379 IBEW. All apprentices in these training programs are required to complete on-the-job training hours, as well as classroom-related instruction hours.
The JATC meets on a monthly basis to discuss and deal with the administrative issues of the various training programs. The JATC is funded by a negotiated contribution that each contractor pays per man-hour worked.
