The National Electrical Contractors Association of Southeast Iowa and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 13 jointly sponsor this apprenticeship training program that offers you the opportunity to earn wages and benefits while you learn the skills for a trade that can be both challenging and rewarding. You will have the chance to use your mind, as well as your physical skills, to complete work in a variety of settings with the constant opportunity to learn something new.

Nationally Approved Program…
The Southeast JATC Program has been approved by the US Department of Labor and the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee. We use the classroom curriculum developed by the NJATC and train our apprentice instructors in the teaching methods they endorse to produce one of the best electrical training programs available today.
All five levels of the program are revised every year to keep up with the latest technologies and recent changes in the National Electrical Code to ensure the apprentice is being taught the most up-to-date information possible. The NJATC has long been recognized as the standard for Electrical Apprenticeship Programs in the United States, and there is no doubt it will continue to be in the future.
Earn While You Learn…
After acceptance into the Southeast Iowa JATC program, apprentices are placed with NECA contractors, where they will be able to use their classroom training in actual field experiences. This is where our program differs from most vocational schools.
The apprentice gets paid a wage while he gets valuable on-the-job training, plus he receives health insurance and pension benefits after the qualifying requirements are met. Unlike most employer benefit plans today, the insurance premiums and pension contributions are a negotiated amount paid by the employer for every hour you work and not a deduction from your check.
That by itself could be a significant point over the lifetime of an individual’s career in electrical construction. The pay scale is based on a percentage of the current journeyman wage that increases as the apprentice advances through the classroom and job requirements, right up until the time the program is completed. Most other programs don’t even come close to offering this kind of wage package while learning a trade.

Welcome to a Rewarding Career in the Electrical Industry
The Cedar Rapids Electrical JATC is a joint Labor-Management training program made up of the combined support of IBEW Local 405 and the Iowa Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association.
In 1941, the IBEW and NECA established the National Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (NJATC) by developing standards that are used nationwide to train thousands of men and women for demanding and rewarding careers in the electrical industry.
Our electrical apprenticeship programs offer an individual the opportunity to “Earn While You Learn”- where you are paid to learn and gain work experience under the supervision of a qualified journeyperson.

A Vibrant Learning Environment
Work and School
The apprentice learns the skills of the trade through on-the-job training working alongside an experienced journeyman who passes on the skills that he or she has learned over the years. In addition to on-the-job training, the apprentice receives a balance of classroom instruction and hands-on lab activities that produces competency and pride that leads to becoming a true craftsman.
Another advantage to an apprenticeship is you earn while you learn. Apprentices start earning a livable wage as soon as they start working. They receive pay advancements throughout their apprenticeship based on reaching certain milestones for their hours worked and hours in the classroom.
The Dubuque Electrical Apprenticeship currently offers apprenticeships in two highly rewarding fields, Inside Wireman and Telecommunications Installer/Technician.
Apprentices receive their education at the training center in Cedar Rapids, IA. Classes are one day a week for 5 hours in the afternoon from the end of August to the end of May. The Inside Wireman program is 5 years, the Telecommunication Technician program is 3 years, and all classes are taught by experienced Journeyman.

The finest and most highly trained electrical workers in the country receive their training through local joint apprenticeship training committees utilizing the standardized education programs developed by the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for the Electrical Industry, supporting both the National Electrical Contractors Associations (NECA) and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW).
The NJATC was created in 1941 and has developed into what perhaps is the largest apprenticeship and training program of its kind. The NJATC supports approximately 275 affiliated JATCs located in numerous communities throughout the United States. The Sioux City Joint Electrical Apprenticeship and Training Committee (SCJATC) is one of those affiliated NJATC programs and has been in existence for over 50 years.
It’s a model education partnership that produces the best-trained, most up-to-date electrical apprentices and journeymen in the country. All of the $100 million annually spent is privately funded.

Established in 1964, Missouri Valley Line Constructors Apprenticeship and Training Program is dedicated to ensuring that the electrical industry of a steady supply of qualified workers. The program, which is based in Indianola, Iowa, is one of seven locations operated by the organization. The others are in the states of Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
Due to the nature of outside electrical construction work, workers are required to move about from place to place to follow the progress of the job. It is also necessary for line apprentices to travel from area to area, not only to contribute toward the progress of a job but to obtain the diversity of work experience required to become a competent journeyman. Missouri Valley Line Constructors Apprenticeship Training Program was established in 1964 as a not-for-profit entity to ensure that the electrical industry of a steady supply of qualified workers.
Because local unions are often not in a position to offer the diversity of work required or reasonably continuous employment of apprentices, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) signed an agreement with Missouri Valley Line Constructors Apprenticeship Training Program permission to govern all matters of apprenticeship and training.
The apprenticeship program based in Indianola, Iowa, is one of seven locations operated by the organization. The others are in the states of Minnesota, Missouri. Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.
The Iowa program occupies a training facility, which includes an outdoor pole yard, located in Indianola, Iowa. The Iowa program trains thousands of apprentice linemen, traffic signal technicians, and substation technicians each year.
