Training Successful Electricians Since 1941
First established in 1941, the Orlando Electrical Joint Apprenticeship Committee adopted the National Apprenticeship Standards for the Electrical Construction Industry and began training electricians. Sponsored by the local National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local Union #606, those first apprentices trained and worked on projects in Orlando that grew the city and helped support the efforts of World War II.
In 1966, the Orlando Electrical JAC merged with the Brevard County JAC to create the Central Florida Joint Apprenticeship & Training Committee. The newly formed JATC covered six counties throughout Central Florida: Orange, Seminole, Lake, Brevard, Volusia, and Osceola.
As the program grew, Apprentices working for signatory Union Contractors helped shape Central Florida working on many construction projects, including Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, Orlando International Airport, Lockheed Martin, and more.
Apprentices today continue to shape Central Florida, receiving hands-on training while earning competitive wages and benefits. Extensive classroom training in history, theory, and Electrical core skills prepare Apprentices to be well-rounded craftsmen.
As a Department of Labor accredited program, Apprentices receive 8000 hours of on-the-job training and 900 hours of classroom education. The Central Florida Electrical JATC is associated with the Electrical Training Alliance, assuring the most up-to-date classroom curriculum in line with other JATC programs throughout the United States.
The Central Florida Electrical JATC has trained thousands of Florida Apprentices for skilled employment. Those Apprentices become licensed Journeyman Electricians working not only in Florida but across the nation. Many Apprentices continue their education utilizing college credit for time in an apprenticeship. Central Florida Electrical JATC is in partnership with Orange County Technical School.

The Tampa Area Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) is a partnership between the Florida West Coast Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local Union 915.
It is the JATC’s responsibility to recruit and train Apprentices to meet the ever-growing needs of the Electrical Industry. In addition to training Apprentices in the necessary skills required to be an Electrician, the JATC also provides an extended education program of skills update and improvement courses to Local 915 members.
Who wires the industrial plants and factories, the warehouses, the office buildings, the shopping centers small and large…and who’s called when something goes wrong with the electrical system in such facilities? Generally, the call goes to our contractors.
To accomplish this, the industry relies on highly skilled journeymen wiremen – electricians who are the heartbeat of every project.
That’s why the industry created a five-year apprenticeship program-involving in-depth knowledge of all types of electrical work. Journeymen are in short supply, with the number reducing as workmen trained 20 to 30 years ago retired.
Our industry has devoted hundreds of millions of dollars and resources to gear up and trains more and more of these highly skilled electricians…the backbone of the electrical construction industry.
